Jungfrau 4158 M
The word Jungfrau means "virgin snow peak". It is covered with snow year round.
It is a great glacier climb with an exposed finish.
The standard route is rated PD+ II-, or ZS, Ice 35-40 degrees.
Based out of the Mönchsjoch hut, we start hiking down glacier to the Aletschgletscher to the so-called “Sporn”. We climb up a rocky ridge to the “breakfast place” from where there is only snow to the summit. The only really exposed section starts at the Rottalsattel, but there are iron belay poles every 50 meters to provide safety up and down.
It takes 4-5 hrs. to climb up and about 4 hrs. to down climb to the Jungfraujoch train station.
The climb is on the largest glacier in Europe, the Aletschgletscher. The views are fabulous from the top.
After a scenic train ride up to the Jungfraujoch, we start our climb from the Moenchsjoch hut.
It is a one and a half-day climb
Day 1
Meet in Grindelwald or at the Jungfraujoch and climb the Mönch the first day and stay in the Mönchsjoch hut.
Day 2
Climb the Jungfrau and return to Grindelwald.
